Reticles, Optical Plane, Eye Relief: The reticle of a scope is placed either in the first optical plane or the second optical plane. As a general rule, European scopes are in the first plane, US scopes in the second (to remember, think US "second" amendment).
First optical plane, variable magnification scopes: Reticles become larger as the magnification is dialed higher; while eye relief remains constant.
Second optical plane, variable magnification scopes: reticle remains a constant size regardless of power setting; eye relief becomes shorter as magnification increases.
For example, a Schmidt & Bender 1.5-6 power scope has a constant eye relief of 3.7 inches whether set at 1.5X or dialed up to 6X. Likewise, the reticle remains proportionally the same size against an animal's body at any setting. On a similar Leupold 1.75-6 power scope, the eye relief varies from 4.8 inches at 1.75X to 3.7 inches at 6X. The Leupold reticle becomes smaller in relation to an animal's body as the magnification increases.
On second plane scopes, hunters should be careful to not "crawl" the stock when increasing the magnification. This will minimize the danger of the scope biting the shooter during recoil. Keep in mind the best reticle for target shooting is not necessarily the best reticle for hunting, please telephone if you would like to discuss the strengths of various designs.
